Basswood The Wildlife of Cottage Country Whether watching a loon dive or spotting a fox at the forest’s edge, these posters are designed to connect you to the ecological and cultural tapestry of our region. This series celebrates the diverse inhabitants of cottage country, blending science with deep-rooted local history. To honour these species and the land they inhabit, names are included in four distinct languages: The Bilingual Identity of the Ottawa Valley & Outaouais: English and French common names representing our local communities. Binomial Nomenclature: A nod to my background in Biology, providing the universal scientific standard for the native flora and fauna of the region. The Language of the Land (Anishinaabemowen): Algonquin names sourced from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Algonquin Pocket Dictionary. A Practice of Reciprocity Including names in Anishinaabemowen, specifically the Algonquin dialect of this region, is an act of reciprocity—giving back visibility to the language of the land that sustains us. This recognizes that Ravenswood Studios Ottawa is located on the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Anishnaabe Algonquin people. This inclusion supports Call to Action 14 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which recognizes Indigenous languages as a fundamental and valued element of this land's heritage. As part of my artwork, this is a gesture of gratitude and a commitment to the ongoing relationship between the Algonquin people and this land, from time immemorial to today.
